Phyllis Kay Swartout

Phyllis Kay (Karr) Swartout, 86, of Anderson passed away following a sudden illness. Phyllis was born January 14, 1933, in Walnut Ridge, Arkansas. As a child, her family moved to Indiana and she attended school in Alexandria, IN. Phyllis attended business college after high school. She later moved to Anderson, IN where she met her husband, James W. Karr. They married and had four boys: Greg, Karr, Kevin Karr, Brant Karr and Patrick Karr. James W. Karr worked for GM when he passed away in 1969. His grave stone reads, "Mr. Good Guy of every year" because he was the nicest and most polite person you could ever meet. Mom briefly worked for Guide Lamp before his passing. She left Guide Lamp in order to raise four boys. She always did her best to provide a good home. Our mom somehow was always able to provided us with presents under the Christmas tree. Mom later met and married Elbert G. Swartout in 1973. He worked for GM for 23 years. The two of them also operated Swartout's Tax Service for 34 years. Mom was a homemaker for most of her life. They were married for 37 years before his passing on April 3, 2010. While they were married, they traveled to over 100 countries around the world. Some of the countries they traveled to are Haiti, Vietnam, Egypt, China and Russia. Mom loved to play bingo, and her greatest enjoyment was gambling at Hoosier Park Casino. Mom is survived by Greg Karr of Aurora IL, Kevin and Vicky Karr of Anderson, IN, Brant Kar and Shirley McGhee of Anderson, IN and Patrick and Angie Karr of Troy, OH. Phyllis also had six stepchildren: Steve, Pete, Sandy, Patricia, Dan and Dave. Grandkids include: James and Bryant Karr of Aurora, IL, Brandon, Aaron and Chloe Karr of Anderson, IN, Marisa, Katie, Lucas, Andrew, Grace and Zachary of Troy, OH Great grandkids include: Skylar and Mason. Mom also has one last surviving sister named Joan Faucet of Anderson, IN. Mom was preceded in death by her parents, James Sr. and Mina Prentice of Anderson, IN She was also preceded in death by her sister Glenna Sue Grey and her bother, James Jr. Prentice. Mom's passing has left a giant hole in our hearts. She will be missed by all of her family and friends. Our mom had many sleepless nights worrying about her boys out late.
