Dwight Richard Smith

Pendleton - Dwight Richard Smith, went home to be with the Lord October 17, 2007 at St. John?s Hospital surrounded by his family. Born December 21, 1927 in Mahomet, Illinois, Dwight lived in Madison County most of his life. He retired from Delco-Remy after 40 years of service, and was known by many as "Smitty". He attended Belmont Bible Church where he drove the church bus for many years. Dwight was an active member of Ovid Community Church where he served in the Friday Night Country Kitchen preparing meals for the community. Dwight was a walking miracle ? about three years ago he entered test treatments for macular degeneration and completely regained his vision. These treatments earned him his fifteen minutes in fame when he was interviewed multiple times by WTHR news in Indianapolis. Dwight was a gifted craftsman and handy-man. He loved spending time with his family especially on family vacations and watching basketball. He was his grandchildren?s biggest fan, and never missed any games. He was preceded in death by his father, Lewis Perry Smith, mother Marie Smith, an brother Wallace Smith. Dwight is survived by Patricia, his loving wife of 61 years, and his children, Karen Landes Bob, Terry Smith Sharon, Cathy Danner Mike, and Emily Eskew Randy. He is also survived by his grandchildren Alan Landes Tandi, Eric Danner Lisa, Lori Schulz Scott, Amy Danner, Amanda Spencer Richard, Kaley Smith, Kara Holman Mike, Alissa, Jessica, and Nellie Eskiew, Tony Floyd Lynn, Danny Floyd Cecilea, Jackie Black Garyand Shana Miller. Dwight was very proud of his great-grandchildren, Brynden Danner, Sam and Nicholas Danner, Olivia and Anna Landes, Clara and Cohen Schulz, soon-to-be-born baby girl Spencer, Taylor and Evan Floyd, Hannah Floyd, Gary, Elijah, Andrew, Levi, and Skylar Black, Cody and Courtlyn Miller, and Bailey Holman. Sister Wanda Wetz, brother-in-law Bud Highbaugh Cynthia, sister-in-law Naomi Highbaugh, and many nieces and nephews. He was Poppop to all that knew him - countless "adopted grandchildren" will miss him greatly. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, October 19, at Robert D. Loose Funeral Homes and Crematory, South Chapel, 200 W. 53rd St., Anderson. Services will be Saturday, October 20, 2007 at 1:00 p.m. with visitation one hour prior to the service. Pastor Keith Wooden officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Anderson .
