Charles Hugh Graybiel

Charles Hugh Graybiel, 80, of Anderson, passed away on May 24, 2022, at his residence surrounded by his wife and four children. He was born on December 3, 1941, in Anderson, Indiana where he resided most of his life. Dear Dad, We are so glad that you are no longer in pain, but we sure are going to miss your stories of growing up in "The Polish Acre" playing baseball and jumping the Nicholson File fence with your buddies to go fishing. And, how many of your childhood friends referred to you as "Charles Hugh" your whole life because they could still hear Nana's daily high pitched calls of "Charles Hugh!" signaling that it was time for you to come home. We will miss hearing about your high school (Madison Heights High School Class of 1959) years of dancing at The Indian Room, hanging out at Frisch's or The Pink Horse, and, most of all, all the fun you had with Skinner, Eckstein and Linville. We remember Nana would sometimes send you the "30 Years Ago Today" clippings from the paper that told of how you struck out "13 batsmen", had a great batting average in some game, or threw a no hitter. While you were rolling your eyes, we were secretly looking at you thinking, "Wow! My Dad is a hero, even at baseball!" We loved hearing how you joined the army, fell in love with mom, and then talked her into marrying you and moving to Germany where you were stationed. We loved hearing about all the adventures you two had while living in Europe from catching mom jumping on the bed to bribing the car inspector with a bottle of whiskey. We were always so proud of you for serving our country, and of mom for being an army wife. Even though our friends said you never smiled while driving the school bus, we knew it was only because you had been up all night working at Delco-Remy. We hope you know we were always very grateful that you literally worked day and night to make sure your wife and children had all they needed. We know that you were just grateful that you were able to work so long with your good buddy St. Clair! And, grateful to people like Anson for keeping you busy when you were selling houses for F.C. Tucker after you decided to retire from GM! We want to thank you, dad, for helping our mother provide us with such wonderful childhoods. We all have such great memories of Edgewood Country Club, going to the lake, taking family vacations to Florida, and always knowing that our house was the safest place in the world. Thank you for always being there for all of us. Thank you so much, to you and mom, for the idea of having a family house on Lake Manitou. Although, we do know that no one loved it more than you, we know it wasn't because of the fishing, but rather because you could sit on the deck and watch your grandchildren play all day. We know you loved that it allowed you to spend so much quality time and have such a close relationship with them. We are sure that they will always hear your sarcastic, "hee hee hee" whenever someone beats them to a play in double solitaire. Thank you, dad, for showing us how important it is to be spiritual, and for, during our younger years, forcing us to go to church with you. Thank you for being our role model by doing the best you could to live by the teachings of Jesus every day. Most of all, thank you for loving our mother so much and showing us that family always comes first. Being married almost 60 years could not have always been easy, but you showed us that it was always worth it. You will be dearly missed by your "fetching lady" wife Carol (Wilkinson) Graybiel; children, Mary (Steve) Schilke, Marjorie (Steve) Rau, Melissa (Larry) Thompson, and Charles W. (Kristal) Graybiel; 11 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren. Also, by your sisters, Susanna (Robert) Degitz and Lisa (Duane) Julius; brother and sister-in-law, Roger Patrick (Margie) Wilkinson and Jane (John) Nunes, well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins. We are sure that your parents, Iris Maxine and Charles Graybiel, aka Nana and Papaw; and Carolyn and Roger L. Wilkinson, M.D., aka Catty and Papa, were there waiting for your arrival in heaven. Thanks again, Dad! We love you! Mary, Marji, Missy, Chuck Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 8, 2022, 10:30 am - 11:30 am at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, 2801 Lincoln St., Anderson, IN. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow visitation at 11:30 am at the church with Rev. Tom Metzger officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to The Leukemia Society or St. Ambrose Church.
